Most players don’t improve because they lack structure and guidance

Improvement doesn't come from random hitting. It comes from following a clear path—knowing what to work on, how to train it, and how to track progress over time.

playing vs drilling

Playing more doesn't mean you're improving

Even by playing more games, progress is inconsistent. Hitting for the sake of "drilling," without the right structure and intention is not effective.

Drilling should take up 75% of your play time.

  • No clear structure or drilling plan

Drilling is random without knowing what to focus on in each drill.

  • Uncertainty about what skills to train

Without a roadmap, its hard to know what skills to work on next.

  • Lack of technical understanding

You might be making the same mistakes without realizing it. Without technical awareness, progress hits a plateau.

  • No way to track improvement

It’s hard to know if you’re actually improving or just reinforcing bad habits.

3.0–3.5 roadmap

At the 3.0–3.5 stage, players move from simply keeping the ball in play to developing intentional control and basic strategy. The goal is to improve consistency, understand when to attack versus reset, and transition more effectively to the kitchen line.

Players at this stage begin learning how to slow the game down, extend rallies, and make smarter shot decisions instead of reacting randomly. Movement and positioning also become more structured, especially when playing doubles.
